Overview of Services

This is a core facility aiming to provide resources and expertise for all aspects of cryo electron microscopy, from sample preparation, to imaging, to data analysis. Initial emphasis will be on the single particle electron microscopy where isolated protein samples are flash frozen on electron microscope grids and imaged at cryogenic temperature with low electron dose. Depending on interest and resources, cryo electron tomography projects can also benefit from this core facility.

Our 200kV Glacios cryo electron microscope equipped with a Falcon4i direct electron detector with a Selectris energy filter, and is suitable for data acquisition as well as sample screening for other cryo electron microscopes at NYSBC and other institutions. For sample preparation, we offer an FEI Vitrobot Mark IV robotic plunge freezer for rapid freezing of the sample solutions on EM grids. In addition, we provide a plasma cleaner to create a fresh grid surface prior to sample application. Apart from this we offer basic laboratory equipment such as incubators, a bench top centrifuge and shaker, basic light microscopes to enable last steps of sample preparation on site. For data analysis we are collaborating with the Scientific Computation Unit. We aim to provide support first at theoretical level to make most of the available software and eventually also provide hands on trainings and user EM data analysis on our linux workstation.
